Protoss Pylon and Warpgate

Hey Federico, I am starting up a page for my WIP so that you can guage my progress

here is a snapshot of my old scene

an AO of my old scene

old Zmodel of my scene

and another

above is the Pylon from game footage. As you can see I took a lot of liberties.

I am starting from scratch on this one. I added more intricacy to my shell forms. My idea behind the Protoss architecture, is an opposite to the human aesthetic of functional space marine durability. I want the Protoss architecture to be fluid and delicate, relying on their forcefields for protection, When the force fields are gone, the delicate machinery is easily destroyed.

I wanted to start from scratch because I didn't really fulfill any requirements for the scene. It needs to be a scene of destruction... So I need to create a cloudier sky, with comet like things falling from the sky in the background, smoke in the distance, cracks on the ground, a broken pylon with a shattered crystal, etc....

I have no clue how to do destruction though...hopefully you know a way to break things with rigid body simulations.

Here I resculpted the ring and shells. Not UV'ed and no HiFreq. I just slapped on a MiaXpass for the crystal and car phen for the shell. I haven't had a chance to work on the crystal except to change the overall shape. Ideally it would have a honeycomb cleave...or pattern as the protoss has a distinct honeycomb pattern in blizzard art.

For the crystal, here are some photos I took at London's natural history museum. The quality is terrible.

I like the translucent quality, but a bit too strong

the quality that I would like to achieve...75% transparent, 25% transluscent, in blue...

hexagonal cleave looks cool

square cleave, reflective

I like the cleave, I would love for my crystal to shatter like this in long hexagonal cleaves

cool look, but not for this

Terrible pic, but I like the glowing effect

below are some samples from the web

very cool cleavage pattern above right

dig the one on the right above

cool cleavage on the left also like the mix of translucence vs transparency

hexagonal cleavage patterns

issues:

sculpting with radial symmetry or using 1/4 version with same UV space.

Breaking objects

freeform organic sculpting

creating internal lattice work
